As mentioned earlier, Mandarin is a tonal language. This means that the tone you use when saying a certain syllable impacts its meaning (e.g. the syllable "ma" spoken in the first tone means mother while in the third tone it means horse). There's a total of four basic tones and in this video you'll learn how to recognize and say each one of them.
